Clinical trials and Aboriginal communities

Practical tools and guidance for health professionals working with Aboriginal communities

The Rural, Regional and Remote Clinical Trial Enabling Program works in partnership with health professionals supporting Aboriginal patients and communities, to support culturally safe and respectful participation in clinical trials.

We collaborate with local Aboriginal health services, Elders and community organisations to ensure research reflects the priorities, value and needs of Aboriginal people. We hope this approach builds trust, improves access to clinical trials and supports meaningful participation across rural and regional NSW and the ACT.

Supporting culturally safe clinical trial conversations

This page supports health professionals working with Aboriginal communities to have informed, culturally safe conversations about clinical trials with patients and communities.

By strengthening knowledge and confidence, we aim to support informed decision-making and ensure Aboriginal communities can participate in clinical trials in ways that are safe, respectful and beneficial.

Clinical trial resources and guidance

Flowing Pathways

In 2025, the Rural, Regional and Remote Clinical Trial Enabling Program commissioned Wiradjuri artist Amy Kilby to create a bespoke Aboriginal artwork. Developed in close collaboration with the Program team, Flowing Pathways is designed to spark curiosity, encourage conversations and promote confidence in clinical trials in Aboriginal communities across the ACT and rural, regional and remote NSW. The artwork will be featured in program resources, presentations and communication materials to support culturally safe and meaningful engagement.
